HEART RATE ZONE CATEGORIES

Our heart rate system is now live for all classes! If you’ve got a device and are planning to hook up - here’s the lowdown on the 5 training zones and when you should reach them!

🩶 HEART RATE ZONE 1 - GREY

50 to 60% maximum heart rate.

This is a very light workout, or the warm up or cool down of a class.

Typical Zone 1 classes are the mind-body classes like stretching, slower-paced pilates, or gentle yoga.

💙 HEART RATE ZONE 2 - BLUE

60 to 70% maximum heart rate.

This can be described as light effort, at a cardio level that can be maintained.

Although your heart rate is not too high – this is where the majority of your cardio work should be as zone 2 is where your general base fitness efficiently develops.

Pilates, fast yoga flows, steady spin, and high repetition weight training will likely be in this zone.

💚 HEART RATE ZONE 3 - GREEN

70 to 80% maximum heart rate.

Here’s where your breathing begins to sound like you’re exercising, and the workout feels moderate. Zone 3 training enhances your efficiency and general training pace.

Most cardio-based classes like Studio Spin, Pound® will keep you in zone 3. However in high intensity classes like GRIT or Ride or Die, zone 3 is often where you attempt to recover.

🧡 HEART RATE ZONE 4 - AMBER

80-90% maximum heart rate.

This is where you get busy! You are pushing your heart towards maximum beat capacity, sustaining zone 4 effort for no longer than 10 minutes at a time.

You’ll reach here in GRIT, Bodycombat and during sprints in Spin, plus at peak moments of various classes - but very few of us end up with zone 4 as the average for our entire group exercise class, and that’s not its purpose either.

❤️ HEART RATE ZONE 5 - RED

90 to 100% maximum heart rate.

This is where you should give it your all. It’s the finisher, the final push, and that last fighting effort to leave it all on the table.

Some classes will build to one final peak towards the end, and some will hit there two or three times. You should spend the least time in this zone, because it’s too hot to handle!

ℹ️ HOW TO USE HEART RATE IN GROUP FITNESS CLASSES

The benefit of knowing where your heart rate is at, is the ability to do something about it if the numbers are not what you need for the results you’re working for. Real-time feedback also shows you immediately how your body reacts to added intensity.

What if you’re hitting zone 3 in a warm-up? Pull it back and give your body time. Too hard too fast will reduce your ability when it counts.

What if you’re in a spin class and can’t seem to leave zone 2? Pick up your pace and add resistance!

What to do when BodyCombat has you stuck in zone 3? Add more power into every strike, and lift your knees higher!

And for those days when you really want to see what you are made of, take a look at your beats and challenge yourself to hit a high note and visit zone 5 by pushing harder, faster, and higher.

COMPATIBILITY

Compatible devices must broadcast in ANT+, not just Bluetooth.

If you don’t have a compatible device, here’s a well priced option we recommend:
